A Jet2 flight that took off from Edinburgh Airport on Monday morning had to make an emergency landing just 30 minutes after takeoff. The flight, LS3915 was on its way to Rome but had to land at Birmingham Airport instead.

According to the Scottish Sun, the plane left Edinburgh at around 6:50 AM a bit later than its planned departure time of 6:15 AM. It was supposed to arrive in Rome at 10:20 AM. However, shortly after takeoff the pilot sent out a “7700 squawk” code. This code is used worldwide to signal an emergency and lets air traffic control know that something is wrong.

According to flight tracking websites, the plane first followed its usual route. But then it changed direction and turned east over Stoke-on-Trent. After circling near Birmingham, the plane landed safely at Birmingham Airport around 7:40 AM.

Jet2 later confirmed that the emergency was caused by a medical issue involving a passenger. Once the issue was handled on the ground, the flight continued its journey to Rome.

Reports from Edinburgh Live state that this is not the first time a Jet2 flight from Edinburgh has had to make an emergency landing. In March 2023, a flight heading to Gran Canaria had to land in Manchester because of a technical problem. Then, in October 2023, another Jet2 flight going to Palma de Mallorca also made an emergency landing in Manchester shortly after takeoff.

Authorities at Birmingham Airport have been asked for more details about what happened during Monday’s emergency.

This latest incident has raised concerns as it adds to a series of mid-air emergencies involving Jet2 flights from Edinburgh. Thankfully, in this case the plane landed safely and no serious harm was reported.
